This picture book appeals to the visual strengths of students on the autism spectrum, with color photos of students demonstrating various social skills in the correct (and sometimes incorrect) way. The skills depicted are meant to be read, role-played, corrected when necessary, role-played some more and, finally, to be practiced by the student in real-life social situations. “Thought bubbles” show what people are thinking during these interactions (not always what you hoped!). Practical, engaging, and down-to-earth, this is a valuable tool to help teens navigate the often-mysterious rules of social conduct in everyday situations.

Good visuals
It is hard to find a social stories book with good visuals for visual learners. I rely on this one as it is photographs. I do think sometimes the stories are a little simple, but that is needed for most of the students or my son, where I use this. It helps break things down into “yes do this” or “no don’t do it this way”. Some we can talk about the subtle differences that can occur. It is a good jumping off point for further conversations.

easy suggestions on learning how to socialize with peers
I bought this book for my 13 year old daughter who has Aspergers in order to help her get ready for high school. The moment I showed her the book she started reading it right away. It’s has quick, simple, easy suggestions on learning how to socialize with peers. She and I, along with her therapist discuss how she should approach her peers, how to make friends etc., but what I like best about this book is that it has pictures to help her model the behavior we’re trying to teach her. Given she is a head strong 13 yr old she’d rather take a lesson from something she reads or sees on her own, not from mom.

Great book for social skills training
Great book! I used this for social skills group with autism spectrum teenagers and young adults. I put stickie notes on the words to let them guess emotions then let them see the words. This is a good quality product and I’ve actually purchased another one to use in a different setting with psychotic patients. As a clinician, I’m glad a book like this is available to the public because I think parents could actually use it with their autism spectrum youth.

Great, simple book
This book does a good job illustrating some of the nuances of social skills. It is presented in comic strip fashion, usually a wrong way and a right way, for some basic social skills. The thought bubbles give the reader an insight of what each person is thinking. I would recommend this book for someone who really struggles with social skills, not one who is processing through the nuances of social behavior.

Great resource for social skills
I have used this book with my students as a middle school speech pathologist. The pictures are a great resource for the students to visualize the right and wrong way to behave. They enjoy correcting the wrong pictures as part of therapy. An added bonus it that another book of Jed Baker’s has worksheets and lessons that directly teach the social skills in the pictures. Truly a great resource for anyone who teaches social skills.

Pictures Out of Date
My high school students complained that the pictures are very outdated. They don’t seem to be high definition are are hard to focus on. No pictures of students with cell phones which is a major part of socialization these days. Overall the structure of the book is nice and the introduction is an interesting read.

I found this book on a table at a NAS teenage awareness event, and liked it that much I got one for my thirteen year old ASPY son. I then lent it to school and they got a copy of their own, they liked it so much.It is American and this comes across in the pictures and some of the writing, but the sentiment and the impact of the photo comic book style hits the spot. My son and I went through the book together and later he read it himself, occasionally he takes it down from the shelf or I leave it out at a particular page when a situation has arisen which needs a little social awareness! the pages about urinal awareness where inspiring as understandable I don’t go in the male loos with my son, but he needs to understand the etiquette of were to stand and what’s appropriate when using the male urinals, who knew a book would cover this subject? but it does and it does it well. a recommended buy.

Bought to help with a young person in high school, yes it’s got American terminology but you can change that and even use as a basis to create your own picture book.
