Perfect for Toddlers!
One of my favorite stories to read, act out, & sing as a preschool teacher of 20 yrs. Now that I’m a grandmother I get to enjoy reading the story to my grandchild~ always is requested by her when we get together. Making the story interacitve & enjoying the pictures together is exceptionally fun!!

Classic fun!
My preschool children loved this book and now my granddaughter does too. We enjoyed finding props to make sounds mimicking the sounds in the book and making hand motions for the repeating text. So much fun!

Hardcover might be a pop up book
I didn’t realize the hardcover was a pop up “snow globe edition. I would have preferred a simple book. I absolutely love this book, and have owned it before. My kids tore up our paper edition through use, so I repurchased the hardcover thinking it would be sturdier. It is a pop up, and it’s beautiful, but I’m just worried it will be fragile. I’m keeping it but I’d have preferred a sturdy copy to a pretty copy. For those that said that the story is boring…we do a lot of hand motions to make it fun and they LOVE it. We clap to the beat. We stomp through the “mud” and we pretend to splash our feet through “the river”. We fall down through “the forest” and we always end the book by covering our heads with a blanket like we are hiding from a bear. The storyline of “hunting a bear” doesn’t bother me. It’s a story about a family going for a walk while pretending to hunt for (look for) a bear, not expecting to find one. They’re not trying to literally hunt down a bear. When they do accidentally find a bear the family in the story run back through the terrain they’ve just come through. For my kids, that means we get to stomp, fall over, splash, etc all over again, but quickly the second time through as the family in the story runs home. All 4 of my kids have loved it from about age 2 on up. It’s a fun story if you use your imagination and make it fun.

Great book, a little damage from shipping
I love the story, pictures and the book. Hard cover perfect for little hands. Book 5 stars minus 1 for shipment damage. It was shipped in a padded envelope but a couple of sides got damaged (little dents). Because it is not a present I am going to keep it. Hopefully it will be read so often that it will look very used soon.

Beautifully simple book that my 2 year old loves. The pictures are simple but perfectly suited to the story and the premise of a hunt is simple but teaches routines, order and gets kids up and on their feet. The actions that you can make up or see on youtube really enthuse youngsters and I’ve used this many times in school for reception classes to KS3 SEN pupils who really get a kick out of joining in with the storytelling. Add to that the possibilities for creative arts, kids making there own pictures/models and prints of the river/forest and bear etc…a winner every time.Additional: Have recently been accepted on to a teacher training course having used this story in my interview with a group of Year 4s. We couldn’t use the book, but had to memorise the story and justify our use of our chosen story. This story teaches order and sequencing and uses repetition of rhyme. The kids loved it, (even mentioned that in class they can do extension work such as their own pictures of the ‘squelchy mud’, acting and role plays etc). It grabbed their attention and the chase home up the stairs and under the duvet followed by a plenary review is one thing that really impressed the panel. If you haven’t already used this in the classroom…I’d ask why not.

Such a beautiful rhyming story, kids love doing the actions. There are tonnes of materials online for creating activities around the story. A brilliant teacher book and can work for TEFL teaching too. YouTube has songs linked to it as well.
