Tomato Dilemmas
I put this to use today. It is easy to read and seems to give an accurate read so far. I was worried my plants were a bit too warm in my grow tent. Looks like I’m not frying them in their pots – thank goodness. It is easy to calibrate. Make sure you have a pair of pliers handy and some ice water so things go smoothly. My thermometer was reading 60 degrees initially so it had to be adjusted. When I went to test it again in ice water, the temperature was perfect.

Accurate and simple to use. Able to calibrate it.
This thermometer has been quite helpful in determining the temperature of soils for my plants. It’s nice to keep track of germinating seedlings as well as established plants. It gives fairly quick readings (less than 30 seconds) and has seemed to be pretty accurate. This is a must if you want to check on your soil temps outside. I haven’t had any issues with moisture getting into the needle area, but I also am pretty careful with it and don’t get it terribly wet. A very nice feature of this item is its adjustment nut. If needed, you can calibrate the thermometer against a known temperature to ensure its accuracy. I know another reviewer complained about the adjustment nut being too loose, but I haven’t had any issue with that whatsoever. I would imagine you could just tighten it up if it became a problem anyway. It also works well for reading ambient temperature even when you don’t have it sticked in anything.

It is a good product
It is a good product. I use it to check the soil temperature. In hunt morel mushrooms In the spring. They start popping out of the ground when the soul temps are 70s daytime and around 50 at night. It works great.

Cracked first use
Simple metal spike thermometer. I would like it better if it was built a bit stronger. I used my palm to slowly push it into my soil. I think it grazed a rock on the way down, but I pushed very slowly and was careful to not put too much pressure. The top clear plastic cover over the dial cracked with the slightest of pressure.Be aware that my $5 digital meat thermometer worked just as good and didnt crack when used many times in the lawn.

Did the job very well

Didn’t work for me. Can’t calibrate it, asked twice. Accu-Rite made in China. Return allowed only if unused. Reviews on this product have both good and bad ratings, so it seems some work and some don’t. Sold as Chaney Soil Thermometer. In my case, I expected it to work, used it, so return policy says no. In any event return postage would have been more cost and bother.
