I’m a new father, i’m also big into data analysis, so i’m always looking for something that helps me collect data on how my little one is doing. I’m a data hover dad, I can admit it. So I picked this up so i can check on the breathing of the baby and to catch if the baby may roll over or whatever. As far as I can tell the data is pretty accurate. I’m not expecting 100% accuracy, but i’m good with 90% accuracy. It’s really easy to set up, though they may be a little fussy when you clip it to the diaper but setup is easy and I have a separate device that I use for monitoring that doesn’t have any personal data on it (ironically i’m also big into data privacy when is next to impossible in this day and age). This gives me the peace of mind and helps me perfect being a hover dad.

Can be hard to use if you are swaddling/layering your baby for colder weather
This is not a medical device, nor does it promise or guarantee to keep your baby safe, which I think is important to realize. However, as a basic monitoring device, it is a decent option. You charge the little clip that goes on your baby’s diaper, and the battery lasts for a few days. I was worried about the clip overheating, because it does press against your baby’s stomach, but I haven’t had any issues with redness, heating, or even an indent.The app is easy to use, and stores just over a week of data. You can set your own thresholds for things like breathing and temperature, and it updates continuously. I will say that it does tend to drain your phone battery a bit quicker than normal, I think because it is constantly monitoring, so that’s something to be aware of.You do have to kind of fiddle with it a bit, if you’re in a colder area and your baby is in a sleeper and swaddled, you may get false alarms for rolling/stomach sleeping, I think because of the pressure of the swaddle, so that’s something to keep in mind. This can affect the “feel” temperature as well, as it may report a heightened room temp. but really it’s just the baby’s temp. Again, I’ve only noticed these issues with the addition of clothes/swaddling over the monitor.It also doesn’t seem the most accurate when it comes to the side the baby is on, and it has reported that my baby is “sitting” when I’ve picked them up to breastfeed, so I don’t really tend to rely on the temperature and positioning, which were two perks of this item over some other breathing trackers. At this point, as the weather grows colder, I mainly use it for quick breathing checks, and rely on the visual monitor for positioning and temperature.

I especially love the rollover and overheating alarms — they’ve given me peace of mind during those long nights when I can’t help but peek into the crib every few minutes. This Babytone Smart Baby Monitor comes with one clip on monitor (which clips onto a diaper), an extra clip and a charger. You are also able to download a free app which fairly easily connects to the monitor to help you to track readings.Sadly, I was very disappointed in this baby monitor. My biggest complaint about this baby monitor is that it only alarms when you have the app open. So, if the app happens to get closed or your phone turns off, you do not get notified when your baby’s stats are out of the set parameters. Additionally, I am not thrilled with the stats that are offered. Unlike other baby monitor trackers this monitor does not check pulse ox or pulse rate. Instead, this monitor only tracks temperature, breaths per minute, and has a roll-over monitor. For me, these just are not useful metrics.Unfortunately, this Babytone Smart Baby Monitor is a rare product that I cannot recommend because it just does not do what I need it to do well. There are other products that do the job much better.

Pros and cons
This monitor is nice as an extra item to give you peace of mind. I did notice that it would say my baby flipped over or was on one side when they were not, so not the most accurate for that. I also don’t appreciate that the Bluetooth disabilities is limited and my connection seemed to drop often even if wasn’t moving.On the positive side, it was extremely simple to set up. I appreciate the breathing monitor as the parent of a baby who is sometimes extremely still. I also appreciate the temperature monitor. I find the battery life to work well with my baby’s sleeping patterns.
